What started out as a rough sketch ended up getting much closer to being a finish than it ever should have. I modeled Lew Archer after Ross Macdonald (Kenneth Millar in real life), which seemed appropriate, as the fictional detective's voice has, over time, become associated with the author's own. I depicted Archer in a stereotypical private eye's office with filing cabinets and an oscillating fan. My initial ink sketch even included cast shadows from a venetian blind. I had originally intended to block things in loosely in the digital version, but, I started rendering the elements rather tightly and pressed on because I was enjoying the process of working on the image. I wasn't completely happy with the overall feel. The pose felt a little stiff and a bit clumsy, but, I did like the idea of including the three books related to the short stories written by the author.
